This new service will be located at Guildford Museum in the Longworth Discovery Lounge, named in memory of Andrew Longworth who worked at the museum and was passionate about sharing history. Volunteer stewards will be there to help you search for information about the town's buildings and inhabitants in past times.
In addition to a wide collection of books on the history of Guildford and surroundings, the newly developed Guildford Inhabitants compendium offers a remarkable tool for research. Searchable digital files provide a snapshot of town centre inhabitants from the 1800s using historic and contemporary records. This compendium has been compiled by a local lady fascinated by the town's history, from various records including census returns, trade directories, electoral registers, and newspapers. This unique resource is extremely useful for research on families, businesses and the buildings themselves. Other information will be added to the reference collection and online archive as it becomes available.
Guildford Borough Council Heritage Services and the Friends of Guildford Museum are working in partnership to offer this new service for everyone interested in the town's history. Public enquiries welcome. Contact history@friendsofguildfordmuseum.org.uk
The Longworth Discovery Lounge will open on Friday 13 June from 12 pm to 4 pm and, thereafter on the second Friday of the month between the same hours.
